Still more May

A few other members of the PTA and I got to go to the scholastic warehouse and spend the school's $1000 in scholastic dollars! We were stocking up on items for next school year's Christmas store, so we were looking for more toys/little stuff that they have at book fairs. Thankfully I had a cart all to myself for my own book shopping! Everything was buy one item get one free! They had a separate section where you could fill a box with as many books could fit for $28. I couldn't pass that up! I came home with so many books and Harry Potter memorabilia. Heaven!

James's den leader invited everyone over to his house for a barbeque and pool party. The kids had so much fun playing in the pool and in his backyard while the adults got to sit and visit. It was the best time! I so admire people who are comfortable hosting parties and are willing to have people over. It stresses me out to throw together last minute things like that, I almost never invite people to my house!

After picking up Rett from preschool one afternoon he came running up to me and said, "Owen and Liam are going to the new splash pad after school!! Can we go???" So I stayed until the other boys moms came to pick them up and made sure they were ok with us tagging along. I had fun chatting with the other moms and the kids had a blast.

I had a second chiropractor appointment to help with my migraines and the office is directly across the street from a popular ice cream spot. We decided to walk over with the boys and try it out. Both of them have always said that they don't like ice cream, but recently they have come over to the dark side! They are slowly branching out and said that they like one or two types of ice cream.

This was Rett's response on a cute questionnaire for his teacher for teacher appreciation week. Love this boy!

Rett's teachers helped him make this canvas and laminated this questionnaire for me for Mother's day.

Mother's Day was very laid back this year. Since both of our moms were out of town, it was all about me! The boys woke me up with breakfast in bed that Anthony helped them make. Then we got ready for church, where I led the primary in a mother's day song and did singing time (no break for me on sundays!). After church I got to rest and relax while Anthony made dinner. A nice, calm, relaxing day. Perfect!

A friend told me about a man in Cocoa who raises turkeys and then gives them away for free! Anthony found his contact information online and set up a time for us to go pick up some turkeys. It was amazing!!

A white turkey named Christmas was especially friendly. He didn't want treats, he only wanted to be petted. He followed us around the entire time we were there, he even sat on my feet for a few minutes!

We ended up with 10 young turkeys! They are about 3-4 months old and were all hatched together. It is still early to tell, but it looks like we have 3 boys and 7 girls.

We put them in the chicken coop for a few days and then let them out once we thought they had adjusted to their new home. Their first morning out was going great, until Baymax realized they were in the yard. He had never seen them before, so he started chasing them like crazy! They got scared and flew into the trees all around our house. It took them an entire day to make their way back and I wasn't sure if they would even come back. Now everything is back to normal, Baymax thinks of them like the chickens and leaves them alone.

They usually wander around the yard in a group. After a few weeks, one of the turkeys was missing in the morning. Then a few weeks later, another one went missing. We think something is grabbing them at night from their roost in the trees, possibly a bobcat!

I had a meeting at James's school that finished right at his lunchtime, so Rett and I joined him.

After lunch, the elementary kids stayed in the lunchroom to watch the middle school theater class perform the play "Shrek" they've been working on all year. It would have been so much better if they had sound equipment! Most of the kids sitting next to me kept asking me what they said because you couldn't hear them very well.

Safari Todd (local reptile guy) made his yearly trip to the school and the kids got to pet snakes, alligators, and tarantulas.

We had to keep Baymax on his leash outside while he was getting used to the turkeys. One day he started barking like crazy, so I came out to see what he was barking at.

Found it! He was saving us from a garden snake!

James's cub scout pack had their end of the year crossover campout. I couldn't face camping again, especially in the May heat so we decided to come early on Saturday morning and stay all day. The first activity was to build boats for the rain gutter regatta.

Then it was time for a little fishing:

During lunch a bunch of the boys decided to make "rock soup" in a 5 gallon bucket. They spent at least an hour collecting different ingredients and stirring it with long sticks. James and his friend Owen even sampled it. Gross!!

Later in the afternoon a group of viking history reenactors did a presentation on viking weapons and fighting. Dangerous subject for 8-12 year old boys. They all wanted to sword fight immediately.

Rett stole my hat for the majority of the day. Can't say no to this cute face!

During the evening ceremony, each den got to give out all of their rank awards. James got his wolf badge and his religious square knot. Now he is a bear!

After the ceremony, everyone walked with the boys moving on to boy scouts to the water for an arrow of light ceremony. Each boy was going to get to shoot a flaming arrow into the river! James had a stick that he had been whittling into a spear all day, but as we started following the group he realized it wasn't where he left it. He was really upset about it until he remembered that there was a second stick he thought about using, only it was all the way on the other side of the campground. As we walked, he said he would run realllllly fast to that area and grab the stick he needed. We watched him run off into the dark and a few minutes later he came running back and said, "Well, I guess we are going to miss it, because we have to call 911!!!" He told us that when he was getting his stick, someone called out to him in the dark from a picnic table and told him that he thought he was having a heart attack. Anthony and James ran back over there, and then Anthony called 911 and waited for the paramedics to get there. Apparently this older man was bicycling through the trails and started to feel lightheaded, short of breath, and pains in his chest. He was able to get off his bike and walk to this picnic table under a pavilion, but couldn't move after that. It was a dark and deserted area of the park, so it was amazing that anyone came across him at all!! As we left for the night, I got a picture of the firetruck and ambulance leaving with the man. What an amazing experience!!
